MAKE NO BONES ABOUT IT

Do you suffer from foot or leg problems?

Halloween Pumpkin - Atlanta Laser Nail Specialists Atlanta Laser Nail Specialists As the “Baby Boomers” transition into “senior” status, the potential for a decline in bone and joint health is frightful. Even though the majority of this generation leads increasingly healthy and active lifestyles, almost 50% of the American adult population is affected by some type of bone or joint condition. The following examples of bone and joint related conditions are some of the most common reasons for chronic pain and disabilities:

– osteoarthritis
– rheumatoid arthritis
– psoriatic arthritis
– ankle, toe and knee strains, sprains, and fractures
– shin splints
– bunions, hammertoes, heelspurs
Witch in Hat - Atlanta Laser Nail Specialists
As with many foot and leg conditions, Atlanta Laser Nail Specialists emphasize that prevention is key.

What Can I Do to Keep My Bones and Joints Healthy?

– Eat a balanced diet, while increasing your calcium and vitamin D intake. Dairy products, vegetables, eggs, and salmon are great additions to your diet.
– Exercise to increase circulation in your joints and to maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight can add pressure to your joints, often causing pain and swelling.
– Take more time to warm up before exercise, and select lower impact activities and weight bearing activities (which are particularly important for mature women to build bone density).
– Change your shoe style. Limit wearing high heels or pointed toe shoes to only special occasions.
– If you have a sore joint, use an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables on the sore spot.

Tell your podiatrist at Atlanta Laser Nail Specialists if the level of your pain improves or intensifies over time. We will work with you to implement treatment options that can help.

To Avoid Toenail Fungus, Take Preventative Measures. If You Have Symptoms of Toenail Fungus, Atlanta Laser Nail Specialists Recommends Laser Treatment.

Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist, a specialty center of America Foot & Leg Specialists, specializes in the removal of fungus on toenails. All four of our locations around the Atlanta Metro area serving patients in the South Atlanta Metro area including Fayette County, Douglas County, Cobb County, Fulton County, Clayton County, and Henry County, are expert in laser nail and toenail fungus.

Facts about Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is very prevalent and occurs more often as one ages. At least 5% of people suffer from nail fungus infection and it accounts for 30% of all skin infections, according to recent statistics. Even though they are less visible, toenail fungal infections are far more common than fingernail. Toenail fungus can reveal a lot about a person’s health. For example, it could suggest poor circulation in the nails or that your immune system is compromised.

Toenail fungus may initially appear as a little spot of discoloration of one of your toenails, usually yellow or white. At first, you may think that it is just a scratch or mark and ignore it; however, if you let it take hold of your nail, it can turn into a thickened yellow or white tough mess to handle.  At Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist, we offer all of the best options to ensure you the best possible treatment and experience. If you do not treat toenail fungus properly and promptly, then it can lead to other infections and is actually contagious, so you can spread it to other people!

Toenail Fungus is Contagious!

It is possible to catch toenail fungus from somewhere—even though it might seem like it came out of nowhere. If you have toenail fungus, then you might have come in contact with someone else who is infected. Studies have shown that foot infections like athlete’s foot and toenail fungus do spread from person to person among families and those who are close to each other.  Although it might not be classified as “highly contagious,” it is very easy to spread fungal toenail infections through sharing shoes, socks, nail polish, nail tools, and so forth. One of the more common places for fungal infection to spread is the nail salon. If the tools have not been properly sterilized between treatments or a bottle of nail polish is used on an infected person, then fungal infections can be passed very easily throughout the salon. If you regularly go to get pedicures, be sure to ask about their techniques for sterilization and take your own nail polish!

Toenail fungus is much more common in men than women, so nail salons are not the most common way to be infected. Most of the time, fungus that has infected your toenails has started off as athlete’s foot. Then, it is typically spread from walking barefoot around the gym or a public swimming pool. Like previously stated, you should always wear flip flops in these areas to help prevent contamination. If you leave athlete’s foot untreated, it will continue to grow and spread across the soles of your feet and onto your toes, which is why it can infect your toenail, also. It is easiest for bacteria and fungus to grow in wet areas, so you need to make sure to wear shoes and dry your feet!

Typically, toenail fungus results from a trauma to the nail that makes it susceptible for infection; for example, someone stepping or dropping something on your toes, or not wearing shoes that fit properly. People who participate in sports like basketball, tennis, etc. are more prone to a toenail fungal infection because of the rapid stopping movements that cause the foot to slide inside the shoes.

How to Avoid Spreading Toenail Fungus

Once you have an infected toenail, it is much more likely to spread to other nails on the same foot, or even jump to the other foot. The fungus is typically spread by your things you use daily, like your socks. Simply washing the socks is not enough to help avoid this—you need to exterminate the bacteria. You can do this by saturating your socks in eucalyptus oil or bleach before washing them. Also, you can switch to utilizing anti-fungal and anti-bacterial laundry powder. In order to prevent toenail fungus:

  • Keep your feet as clean and dry as possible
  • Do not wear the same shoes two days in row
  • Trim your nails regularly
  • Wear clean, fresh socks daily
  • Avoid tight hosiery because they can hold moisture
  • Wear waterproof sandals at swimming pools and other public wet areas
  • Use the Steri-Shoe available at any of our locations in the Product Store
  • Treatment Options

To treat this condition Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist may prescribe:

  • Topical ointments: Fungus of the nails can be treated with topical ointments applied directly to the nail over a period of time. In many cases, patients can see improvement in months
  • Oral medications: Oral medications can be used to treat toe fungus. However, the fungus may return in as many as 35% of cases.
  • Laser treatments: Laser is high-energy light that is directly on the toenails to the kill the fungus. This treatment can be 77-90% effective in eliminating the fungus and allowing a clear nail to grow. Laser treatment is the method recommended by Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist.

    Laser Treatment for Nail Fungus

laser therapyNow that summer is just around the corner are you ready to put on those cute sandals or kick off your shoes for fun in the sun? Many of us are embarrassed to expose our feet due to unsightly toenail fungus. Nail fungus is a common condition that begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your fingernail or toenail. As the fungal infection goes deeper nail fungus may cause your nail to discolor, thicken and crumble at the edge. It sounds bad and looks awful but there is a pain free treatment that can eradicate fungal toenails and improve the overall appearance! The Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist center at American Foot and Leg Specialists focuses on treating toenail fungus using the most advanced treatment method available. If you suspect that your toenails are infected by fungus don’t wait – make an appointment today for an evaluation.

    What Causes Nail Fungus?

Onychomycosis fungi is very contagious. The number one cause of toenail fungus is blamed on shoes that provide a moist, dark, and warm environment for fungi to thrive. Individuals with diabetes, circulatory problems, and suppressed immune systems are also prime candidates. Lifestyle contributors include walking on gym locker room/shower floors, exposing your feet to continuous damp conditions and even frequent visits to nail salons.

    How Does Laser Therapy Work?

The laser therapy penetrates the nail plate to destroy fungus under the nail by causing thermal damage to the fungus cells and/or photo-inactivation of the fungus cells. It typically requires up to three sessions (each separated by three months) to complete the treatment plan as described below:

Initial visit (evaluation): This visit is to determine if you are a candidate for laser treatment and is critical because there are many causes of thick and yellowed nails. The best treatment will depend on your diagnosis once a sample of your nail is tested in our lab to determine if fungus is present.

Treatment #1: If fungus is detected we suggest that you treat all 10 nails, even if some of them look normal. This helps prevent reinfection. To begin your treatment the nails are thinned with a special toenail grinder and the first laser treatment is performed. The big toenails require about two minutes and the small nails about one minute making the total procedure time less than 20 minutes.

Treatment #2: This visit is performed 3 months after treatment #1. The nail is thinned again and laser treatment is performed again.

Treatment #3: This treatment is performed 6 months after treatment #1. This is the final laser treatment and review of preventing re-infection.

    Post Treatment and Prevention

On average, the big toenails will regrow completely in about twelve months and the smaller nails in about six months. Healthy new growth is usually visible three to four months after the initial treatment. Individuals who suffer from nail fungus usually have inherited an immune system that does not fight fungus very well. Thus, reinfection is not uncommon. The best way to avoid reinfection is to keep your feet dry and covered in damp conditions. Never go barefoot at the gym, and ladies – resist borrowing those cute shoes from a friend! For more information about toenail fungus treatment or to make an appointment contact one of our 4 locations serving patients in Fulton County, Cobb County, Douglas County, Fayette County, Henry County, and Clayton County.

What are Some of the Most Common Foot Problems?

Toe Nail Fungus – (onychomycosis) is the most common foot infection caused by a fungus that infects the tissue underneath the toenail. The result is discoloration of the nail(s) as it becomes thickened and raised. It often occurs as a result from moist feet, footwear that does not allow air circulation, and excessive foot perspiration. It is widely spread in nail salons or other places where bare feet are exposed. Laser treatment can repair the damage and have your toes looking great soon!

Athlete’s Foot – (known as tinea pedis – ringworm of the feet), is a contagious fungus occurring between the toes that thrives in damp environments such as gym showers, and shoes and/or socks that do not “breath”. Over time it causes intense itching, burning, flaky skin, and discomfort as it continues to spread or worsen over time.

Sweaty Feet and Foot Odor – when sweat gets trapped inside shoes, the result can be foot odor, an embarrassing and uncomfortable condition. The foot has more sweat glands than any other part of the body, and that sweat isn’t easily absorbed due to the wearing of socks and shoes. As a result, bacteria can grow which causes an odor. The medical term for sweaty feet is hyperhidrosis, while the term for smelly feet is bromhidrosis. It is recommended that paMacer RX from our store, as well as avoiding wearing shoes made from all man-made materials with no ventilation.

Blisters – are more often than not the result of improper footwear. Friction causes a watery pocket of fluid to form on the upper layers of the skin (epidermis). You’re your feet are sweaty you may be especially blister prone as your feet may slip around in your shoes, especially if you aren’t wearing socks to help absorb the moisture. Exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures or chemicals (contact dermatitis) can also cause blisters.

    Treatment and Preventive Care

Patients with tendency for sweaty, smelly feet should: wash feet often and thoroughly dry them; absorb moisture and odor with powder formulated for feet; and apply topical drying gel. Maintain Fungus Free After Laser Fungus Toenail Treatment

Once Your Toenails are Fungus Free Following Laser Treatment

Once Your Toenails are Fungus Free Following Laser Treatment  It Is Important To Keep Fungus From Infecting the New Toe Nails as They Grow Out

Okay. So you are finally fungus free thanks to your laser toenail fungus treatments at Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist, a specialty practice of American Foot and Leg Specialists, and your toenails are starting their long road to recovery. It typically takes up to 9 months for them to grow back to normal length. But at last they are finally healthy. The question is – how do I keep them healthy and resistant to fungal infections and also yeast initiated fungal infections? Over the counter and at-home remedies like vinegar or hydrogen peroxide soaks to make the nail environment inhospitable to fungus growth have proven to have little effectiveness in eradicating fungus, because such measures, along with topical antifungal agents, cannot usually penetrate the nail or cuticle region where the nail root is located. However, they are not harmful and may have provide some measure of creating an inhospitable environment for fungal regrowth.

What is most important is to keep the fungus from infecting new toe nail as it grows. Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist shares recommendations and products available to keep toenail fungus infection and athlete’s foot from re-occurring.

Anti-Fungus Products Offered at American Foot and Leg Specialist Offices

Steri Shoe: This is one of our best preventative options. Steri Shoe is a patented shoe sanitizer that uses germicidal ultraviolet light (UVC) to sanitize the inside of shoes. Steri Shoe safely and effectively kills 99.9% of the bacteria, fungi, and spores in shoes that cause athlete’s foot, toenail fungus, and shoe odor. For people with diabetic foot problems, Steri Shoe can guard against infection.

Fungi Foam: FungiFoam® Antifungal successfully treats Athlete’s Foot and Ringworm while providing the benefits of four other products: formulated with oil-soluble tolnaftate in natural jojoba oil; calms the itch; moisturizes; and exfoliates. Apply directly to wet skin immediately after drying to seal pores.

Clean Sweep Spray: This spray utilizes a nanosilver formula to provide a clear and flexible antimicrobial micro-coating to safely kill bacteria and neutralize the causes of shoe odor. It creates a “shield” which maintains microbe-free footwear.

Macer RX: A new fast drying gel for deteriorated, infected web spaces between toes due to fungal yeast infection, bacterial infection, and ringworm. Relieves symptoms of itching, burning, and cracking of the infected area.

Oral Antifungal Medication: Lamisil, Sporanox and Nizoral can be quite effective. However they may be associated with various side effects.

Take Precautions at the Nail Salon

For ladies and gents who visit the nail salon for pedicures, Atlanta Laser Toenail Fungus Center recommends the following to ensure that you’re getting a safe, sanitary pedicure, because nail salons can be a boutique of bacteria and fungus:

    • Use Dr.’s Remedy Enriched Nail Polish Collection and Treatments: Nail polishes with anti-fungal properties from natural tea tree oil, which has anti-fungal properties, and other natural ingredients. With over 30 colors to choose from, as well as nail care products including top coat, base coat, and cuticle serum, formaldehyde and toluene free, toenails can be shiny natural or colorful as they grow out.
    • Never share polish, nail cutting instruments or soaking basins at the nail salon. Request a recently cleaned and sterilized soaking basin, preferable one with a detachable tub and filtration systems. This prevents debris that could get caught in the filter from seeping back into the water essentially creating a cesspool during your pedicure.
    • Demand a sealed and steam autoclaved sterilized package of instruments, or at the minimum a UV sterilizer. Request a brand new emory board (or bring your own) because they are the one tool that cannot be sterilized.
    • Watch to make sure your technician washed their hands before starting on your feet.
    • Shaving calluses on your feet with a razor blade is illegal in most states. If your technician suggests it – do not start your pedicure at that salon. You risk getting cut, and if the tool is not properly sanitized, you may come in contact with blood from a previous client. Yech!!
    • Refrain from having a pedicure if you have broken skin, cuts, or abrasions on your toes or feet, and don’t shave any hair on your feet or toes 24 hours prior to, or following a pedicure. The minute nicks and cuts provide an open invitation for infection and fungus.
    • Ask to have the cuticles on your toenails gently pushed back with an orange stick wrapped in cotton. Cuticles protect the toenail from infection.
    • Shy away from fish pedicures. Who knows where those fish have been and whose feet they have nibbled. And they cannot be sanitized, nor is the water you soak in and the fish swim in.

    Daily Post Laser Care

Preventative daily care following your laser treatments assists in maintaining your all clear status. Most of these guidelines are common sense, but they really do make a difference in healthy foot hygiene.

    • Wear comfortable shoes and hosiery that allow your feet some breathing space.
    • Wear shoes, sandals or flip-flops in community showers or locker rooms.
    • Wash your feet every day, scrubbing your nails with disinfecting soap, drying them thoroughly. There is no need to use antifungal soap.
    • Use ant-fungal cream as prescribed by your doctor at American Foot and Leg Specialists.
    • Wear clean socks or stockings every day. Refrain from going sockless in gym shoes.
    • Keep your at-home manicure supplies and tools sanitized by washing in soapy warm water and soaking in alcohol. Clean the storage bag, or replace bag frequently with a disposable plastic bag.
    • Keep toenails trimmed.

You don’t have to suffer the embarrassment of having discolored, unsightly toenails. Make an appointment at Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist, a specialty practice of American Foot and Leg Specialists, to discuss treatment options for your toenail disorders today.

    WINTER DRY FEET DILEMMA
    Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

When it’s cold outside, the last thing you want are dry, flaking and cracked feet. Dry skin on the feet occurs to most people at some time during their lives, and some people are more prone to the condition. Dry skin often worsens in the winter months, typically as a result of indoor heating and low humidity. Wet feet and chilly toes also contribute to dry skin. Not only is dry skin often painful or itchy, but the rough edges of flaking and cracked skin can catch on your socks and tights, either damaging your footwear or ripping the skin. Here are some simple tips to soften and moisturize:
    • Use a alpha-hydroxy acid or urea based foot cream every day.
    • For rough or cracked areas of skin, apply lanolin, which acts as a natural effective moisture barrier.
    • If you are prone to allergies or skin sensitivities, use skin products that are labeled as hypoallergenic or formulated for sensitive skin.
    • Supplement your diet with essential fatty acids alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). These acids decrease water loss in your skin. Sources of ALA include flaxseed oil, walnuts, and canola oil, and evening primrose oil contains GLA.

If your feet have calluses, cracked skin, open wounds, or rashy, dry skin that does not improve with creams or lotions, contact American Foot and Leg Specialists.

Start Your Laser Treatment Now for Clear Nails This Spring

For healthy toenails in the spring, consider starting toenail laser treatment now!

When the cold days of winter are in full swing, it sometimes feels like warm weather will never get here again. However, one of the great things about living in Atlanta is that spring almost always gets here early. When it arrives, you need to make sure that your feet are ready for sandal season. If you have toenail fungus, the thought of warm weather can be scary. If you want to look beautiful in your sandals this spring, you should begin laser treatment with Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist now to clear up your toenail fungus.

    An Unpleasant Sight

If you have toenail fungus, you are well aware of how unsightly it can be. The yellowed, thick appearance of the nails can be really embarrassing for you. This can keep you from enjoying activities like walking barefoot in the grass, swimming or going to the beach. Luckily, laser treatment from Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist will allow you to completely get rid of the fungus from your toenails.

    A Look at the Procedure

When you get laser treatment to remove your toenail fungus, the doctor will determine how many treatments you need to completely rid your nails of the fungus. This is a different number for each patient, and it depends on how advanced the fungus is as well as how effective the treatments are at breaking it down.

Some people hear the word “laser” and start shaking in their shoes. However, you do not have to worry about experiencing any pain when you get the treatment. The laser is 100 percent painless, and you will not feel anything when you experience the procedure. Also, there are no side effects to worry about when treating fungus with a laser, which can’t be said of the prescription medications that are used to treat toenail fungus.

Get Started as Soon as Possible

If you want to get laser treatments to remove your toenail fungus, then you need to begin as soon as you can. This is not a treatment that can be finished overnight. In fact, it will take three months of laser treatments before your toenails begin to clear of the yellow coloration. It usually takes about six to nine months of treatment for the fungus to be fully eradicated from your toenails.

If you want to make sure that your toenails are looking attractive this spring, you need to come in to see the experts at Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist immediately. They are the leading professionals in the area at clearing up toenail fungus with laser treatments. You will love how easy and painless it is to get rid of toenail fungus with the help of these laser specialists. Call them today at 678-432-7060.
