Maintain Fungus Free After Laser Fungus Toenail Treatment
Once Your Toenails are Fungus Free Following Laser Treatment

Once Your Toenails are Fungus Free Following Laser Treatment  It Is Important To Keep Fungus From Infecting the New Toe Nails as They Grow Out

Okay. So you are finally fungus free thanks to your laser toenail fungus treatments at Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist, a specialty practice of American Foot and Leg Specialists, and your toenails are starting their long road to recovery. It typically takes up to 9 months for them to grow back to normal length. But at last they are finally healthy. The question is – how do I keep them healthy and resistant to fungal infections and also yeast initiated fungal infections? Over the counter and at-home remedies like vinegar or hydrogen peroxide soaks to make the nail environment inhospitable to fungus growth have proven to have little effectiveness in eradicating fungus, because such measures, along with topical antifungal agents, cannot usually penetrate the nail or cuticle region where the nail root is located. However, they are not harmful and may have provide some measure of creating an inhospitable environment for fungal regrowth.

What is most important is to keep the fungus from infecting new toe nail as it grows. Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist shares recommendations and products available to keep toenail fungus infection and athlete’s foot from re-occurring.

Anti-Fungus Products Offered at American Foot and Leg Specialist Offices

Steri Shoe: This is one of our best preventative options. Steri Shoe is a patented shoe sanitizer that uses germicidal ultraviolet light (UVC) to sanitize the inside of shoes. Steri Shoe safely and effectively kills 99.9% of the bacteria, fungi, and spores in shoes that cause athlete’s foot, toenail fungus, and shoe odor. For people with diabetic foot problems, Steri Shoe can guard against infection.

Fungi Foam: FungiFoam® Antifungal successfully treats Athlete’s Foot and Ringworm while providing the benefits of four other products: formulated with oil-soluble tolnaftate in natural jojoba oil; calms the itch; moisturizes; and exfoliates. Apply directly to wet skin immediately after drying to seal pores.

Clean Sweep Spray: This spray utilizes a nanosilver formula to provide a clear and flexible antimicrobial micro-coating to safely kill bacteria and neutralize the causes of shoe odor. It creates a “shield” which maintains microbe-free footwear.

Macer RX: A new fast drying gel for deteriorated, infected web spaces between toes due to fungal yeast infection, bacterial infection, and ringworm. Relieves symptoms of itching, burning, and cracking of the infected area.

Oral Antifungal Medication: Lamisil, Sporanox and Nizoral can be quite effective. However they may be associated with various side effects.

Take Precautions at the Nail Salon

For ladies and gents who visit the nail salon for pedicures, Atlanta Laser Toenail Fungus Center recommends the following to ensure that you’re getting a safe, sanitary pedicure, because nail salons can be a boutique of bacteria and fungus:

• Use Dr.’s Remedy Enriched Nail Polish Collection and Treatments: Nail polishes with anti-fungal properties from natural tea tree oil, which has anti-fungal properties, and other natural ingredients. With over 30 colors to choose from, as well as nail care products including top coat, base coat, and cuticle serum, formaldehyde and toluene free, toenails can be shiny natural or colorful as they grow out.
• Never share polish, nail cutting instruments or soaking basins at the nail salon. Request a recently cleaned and sterilized soaking basin, preferable one with a detachable tub and filtration systems. This prevents debris that could get caught in the filter from seeping back into the water essentially creating a cesspool during your pedicure.
• Demand a sealed and steam autoclaved sterilized package of instruments, or at the minimum a UV sterilizer. Request a brand new emory board (or bring your own) because they are the one tool that cannot be sterilized.
• Watch to make sure your technician washed their hands before starting on your feet.
• Shaving calluses on your feet with a razor blade is illegal in most states. If your technician suggests it – do not start your pedicure at that salon. You risk getting cut, and if the tool is not properly sanitized, you may come in contact with blood from a previous client. Yech!!
• Refrain from having a pedicure if you have broken skin, cuts, or abrasions on your toes or feet, and don’t shave any hair on your feet or toes 24 hours prior to, or following a pedicure. The minute nicks and cuts provide an open invitation for infection and fungus.
• Ask to have the cuticles on your toenails gently pushed back with an orange stick wrapped in cotton. Cuticles protect the toenail from infection.
• Shy away from fish pedicures. Who knows where those fish have been and whose feet they have nibbled. And they cannot be sanitized, nor is the water you soak in and the fish swim in.

Daily Post Laser Care

Preventative daily care following your laser treatments assists in maintaining your all clear status. Most of these guidelines are common sense, but they really do make a difference in healthy foot hygiene.

• Wear comfortable shoes and hosiery that allow your feet some breathing space.
• Wear shoes, sandals or flip-flops in community showers or locker rooms.
• Wash your feet every day, scrubbing your nails with disinfecting soap, drying them thoroughly. There is no need to use antifungal soap.
• Use ant-fungal cream as prescribed by your doctor at American Foot and Leg Specialists.
• Wear clean socks or stockings every day. Refrain from going sockless in gym shoes.
• Keep your at-home manicure supplies and tools sanitized by washing in soapy warm water and soaking in alcohol. Clean the storage bag, or replace bag frequently with a disposable plastic bag.
• Keep toenails trimmed.

You don’t have to suffer the embarrassment of having discolored, unsightly toenails. Make an appointment at Atlanta Laser Nail Specialist, a specialty practice of American Foot and Leg Specialists, to discuss treatment options for your toenail disorders today.
