Get ready, START!

Athletes keep in shape, watch their diet, train hard but one thing they have a hard time keeping under control is toenail and foot fungus. Toenail fungus is a type of fungal infection that affects one or more of the nails. One of the first signs of nail fungus is a yellow or white spot at the tip of the toenail. As the fungus begins to spread deeper into the nail, it may discolor, become thicker and develop crumbling edges. This can become an unsightly and painful problem.

Anyone can develop toenail fungus, but athletes are at a greater risk for developing them. One of the reasons that athletes are more likely to develop nail fungus is because their feet perspire heavily. A moist, dark environment creates the ideal environment for fungus to grow. Athletes also spend a lot of time in locker rooms, and fungus can very easily transfer in public places like locker rooms.

Although there is several ways that toenail fungus can be treated, one of the best and most effective ways to treat this problem is with laser nail treatment. It involves using a laser to target the fungus, which destroys it. It takes about 10 minutes to perform laser nail treatment on one toe. The laser only damages the fungus. The nail is left intact.

A single session will destroy about 80 percent of the nail infection. People who have severe nail fungus are often required to get a second treatment. The results are not instant, and it may take up to one year for the nail to grow normal and healthy. Unlike many topical and oral medications, laser treatment does not have any side effects.

Good foot hygiene is the key to preventing fungal infections. People should make sure that they avoid walking barefooted in locker rooms and other public places. They should also wear synthetic socks. Synthetic socks are better at keeping the feet dry than cotton or wool socks. People need to make sure that they change their socks often.

Additionally, it is a good idea for people to keep their nails short and clean. The nails should be trimmed and filed on a regular basis. People will also need to dry their feet off thoroughly after they get out of the bathtub or shower.
